New Year's Resolution Sweatshirt with Layered Iron-On

It's fun to have a special occasion shirt to wear, and it's no different when celebrating the New Year. Many people like to come up with New Year's resolutions each year, and these can be motivating. However, if the timing is not quite right, we may need to rethink that. Here is a fun way I came up with to have a resolution that will keep the pressure to a minimum.

Materials:

Cricut machine
Cricut EasyPress 2 or other version
Smart Iron-On
Everyday Iron-On
Foil Iron-On
Holographic Sparkle Iron-On
Cricut Tools
Sweatshirt

One common New Year's resolution is to read a book each month, but I put my own spin on it since I am an avid reader. I varied the fonts and Iron-On types to keep it interesting. While my resolution may lack a challenge, it makes up for it with a colorful, celebratory design.

My sweatshirt was black, so I created a black background in Design Space to see how that would look.

The colors stood out really well, so I decided to go with it. The text is a bit hard to read with the fireworks layer in the back, but I was still happy with it. It is bright and fun.

I opted to use Holographic Sparkle Iron-on for the blue text, Foil Iron-on for the red text, Everyday Iron-on for the yellow, and Glitter Iron-on for the green. I had pieces of those colors on hand. The white fireworks in the background were cut of white Smart Iron-On.

Since Smart Iron-On is wider than regular Iron-On, I was able to cut all three of the fireworks designs at once, which saved some time. Now that Design Space automatically changes the setting to Mirror for Iron-On projects, I did not have to worry about forgetting that step. Bonus!

Once my designs were weeded, I began by placing the first layer of the fireworks design on my shirt in the desired locations.

I used my 12 x 10 EasyPress 2 heated to 315 degrees for the first Smart Iron-On layer. Here's how it looked applied to the shirt. You will see that the shirt appears grey in the photo, even though it is pure black.

Then I placed the text on the shirt over the fireworks in the correct positions.

All of the remaining Iron-on except for the Foil Iron-On required a  heat setting of 330 degrees, with the Foil Iron-On requiring only 295 degrees. Since I wanted to avoid heating the bottom white layer too much, I used 295 degrees and covered the blue and red text for 30 seconds. Then I was able to up the heat setting to 330 degrees and apply more heat to only the blue text to ensure it was adhered well but only for about 15 seconds.

Next, I continued applying heat at 330 degrees for 30 seconds to the yellow and green text.

I usually turn my shirts over and heat from the back side as well for about half the time to ensure good adhesion, so I did that for the entire design. The heat had to go through two layers of the sweatshirt, so I was not concerned about too much heat being applied with that step. It worked out just fine.

Here is my shirt completely done. I'm happy with how it turned and can't wait to wear it. It's bright and fun and will "make a splash." This may be the largest design I have put on a shirt so far. I often keep them to about 8 or 9 inches, but I like this one big. It's perfect for a celebration.

Another option would be to use different colors for the fireworks in the back and make the text all white. I wonder if the text would have shown up better, but I'd have to make another shirt to find out.

Do you have a resolution for the New Year, or are you foregoing that this year like I am? It's great to try to improve ourselves, but our methods may not look the same, and that's okay. That is what makes us unique.

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.
