Materials:
- Holographic iron-on (I'm using this Cricut Holographic Sparkle Iron-On Sampler in red, green, blue, silver, gold and pink)
- Fabric
- Lightweight double-sided iron-on fabric adhesive
- Batting
- Felt
- Embroidery supplies (optional)
- 5 inch wood embroidery hoop
Directions:
Create your cut design in Cricut Design Space. The Santa images used in this project were found on Graphics Fairy. They are free vintage images in the public domain. Because they are black and white, they are easy to bring into Cricut Design Space and edit for cutting with your Cricut machine.
New to Uploading Designs to Design Space? Follow along with Courtney from our design team as she's shows you how in this video.
Follow the prompts in Design Space to make the project. (Don't forget to mirror the designs prior to cutting.) Weed the cut designs to remove the excess iron-on vinyl using your favorite weeder tool.
Speaking of favorite weeding tools, my new must-have tool for weeding is Cricut BrightPad! I was lucky enough to be gifted one of these recently, and it's a game changer for my old eyes! The BrightPad and BrightPad Go are LED light pads that are perfect for seeing small details when weeding, tracing and so much more. BrightPad is Cricut's original lightbox with 3 light settings and powered by a USB cable. The BrightPad Go is an updated version that includes 5 light settings and a rechargeable battery for cordless convenience. Check out what's in the box for BrightPad Go below.
Apply the iron-on to your fabric using your Cricut EasyPress heat press machine or your household iron. Cricut offers a really wonderful heat guide that will help you know exactly what time and temperature to set your EasyPress for your type of iron-on and fabric. The heat guide takes all the guesswork out of applying iron-on and helps ensure professional results every time! Read more about it in our post on How to the Use Cricut Heat Guide.
Following the heat guide recommendations, I pressed an 8 inch square of my decorative fabric for about 5 seconds at 315 degrees using my EasyPress. Then I created a sandwich with the following layers: weeded iron-on design (liner-side-up) on top of the decorative cotton fabric square, on top of a 7 inch square of iron-on fabric adhesive. I pressed the "sandwich" at 315 degrees using firm pressure for 30 seconds. Then I flipped my sandwich over and pressed again from the back side for another 30 seconds. Remove the iron-on vinyl carrier sheet and iron-on adhesive carrier sheet when cool to the touch.
If you'd like, pull out your embroidery supplies and add a bit of decorative stitching to each Santa. This step is purely optional of course, but I love the look of the added texture on the completed ornament Place an 8 inch square of batting or felt behind the fabric and have fun!
Fit the fabric in the embroidery hoop. Take care to center the santa in the hoop and tighten the screw to secure the layers in place.
Fold the fabric to the back of the hoop. Trim the batting (if you used some) close to the hoop and trim the fabric to within an inch of the hoop.
Use a length of embroidery floss and a simple running stitch to gather the fabric at the back of the ornament.
Sew or glue a circle of felt to cover the gathered fabric and create a finished look for the ornament back.
Thread a length of floss through the fastener at the top of the ornament for hanging.
As you hang your shimmering Holographic Iron-on Santa Ornaments, take pride in the craftsmanship and creativity poured into each one. Whether you followed our step-by-step guide or added your own personal touches, these ornaments are sure to spark joy and festive spirit.
