DIY BrightPad or Tablet Cover Using Cricut Iron-on Vinyl

Create a neat customized tablet cover using neoprene fabric and Cricut Iron-on Heat Transfer Vinyl with this step-by-step guide. From measuring your device to sewing techniques and vinyl application, this tutorial provides instructions for crafting a personalized case that offers both style and protection for your BrightPad or BrightPad Go or handheld computer tablet. Follow along to bring your creative vision to life in just a few simple steps.

Materials:

I chose to make my cover using neoprene from my local fabric store. It provides nice cushioning for a BrightPad or other Apple iOS portable tablet, and the cut edges do not need to be finished. However, it can be challenging to sew. You can always substitute quilted fabric for the neoprene when sewing your own cover. Just know that you will need to modify the instructions a bit in order to finish exposed fabric edges. ECCENTRICITIES BY JVG has a really simple tutorial for crafting a tablet cover using more traditional fabrics at https://eccentricitiesbyjvg.com/fun-and-unique-diy-fabric-case-tablet-cover-in-15-minutes-diy/.

Directions:

Measure your BrightPad or tablet so you can figure what size fabric pieces to cut to make the cover. My BrightPad Go measures about 11 x 13.5 inches. Here's how I cut my neoprene fabric to construct the case.

  • Front - 13 x 14.5 inches
    • Add 2 inches to the width and 1 inch to the length of your device. Cut a piece of neoprene to those measurements for the front of the cover.
  • Back - 13 x 15.5 inches
    • Add 2 inches to the width and 2 inches to the length of your device. Cut a piece of neoprene to those measurements for the back of the cover.
  • Flap - 12 x 6.5 inches
    • Add 1 inch to the width and about half the width of your device. Cut a piece of neoprene to those measurements for the cover flap.

Align the bottom and sides of the front and back pieces (right-sides-facing) and pin in place. Using a half inch seam allowance, sew the pieces together along the sides and bottom, generously rounding the bottom corners. If you are using your sewing machine, be sure to choose a needle and thread suitable for heavyweight fabric and use a long stitch length. I was not sure that my sewing machine was quite up to the task, so I opted to hand sew the cover using a large needle and upholstery thread.

Cut the bottom corners close to the seam to remove excess fabric and turn the cover right side out. Cut approximately 1 x 0.5 inch rectangle from the top corners of the cover (where the flap will be sewn) to remove the excess fabric that was part of the seam allowance. See the detail photo below.
